Fabric Storage Tips - Again -

I have posted about this before -

And - in case you missed them -

You can find the links -

To the original posts -

On the tab/page above -

Fabric Storage Tips -

But - in a nutshell -

This Is How I Do It - ;))

First I fold my fabric to a uniform size -

I use “Shoe cubbies” for storing fat quarters -
I have two in my “Fabric Stash Room” – and I love them -
I fold and roll my fat quarters and stuff them in the cubbies just like they do yarn in a yarn shop. I can group them by color or type or print or whatever – and see what I have at a glance. Besides – it’s pretty!!

I stack my yardage on shelves like books -

For flat folds - and bolts -
I use short and narrow (24” wide x 9” deep) bookcases -
Back to back -
And they serve as a work surface -

The next year -

At the County Fair -

October 1978 -

Only one entry was allowed in the category -

So I chose "Ann" -

She won a blue ribbon - ;))

LHQ - Review - Ruler - Short Cut (TM)

LEFT-HANDED QUILTING - Review - ShortCut™

============
Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.
============

Today I want to show you a REALLY cool little ruler -

That Left-Handed Quilters can use - hassle-free - ;))

My kind of ruler!! ;))

But first -

Disclaimer -
I am in no way affiliated with the manufacturer or supplier of this product - to my knowledge.
I did not get this product for FREE in exchange for a review - aka barter. I paid for it.
I have no intention of slandering or libeling anyone or any product.
I am simply stating my opinions - I could be wrong - you may disagree.
My opinions are based on my experience with this product - your results may vary.
I think that about covers it - if I missed something - let me know.
I am not a lawyer - and I am just trying to cover my a$$. ;)).
===

I’ve talked about and shown this ruler before - here -

But I don’t think that I ever actually did a REVIEW -
So here it is -

Mine is called the
SHORT CUT (TM)
Made by June Tailor, Inc.
http://www.junetailor.com/index.htm

Now it’s called a Shape Cut (TM) -
So that’s how OLD mine is!! ;))

Description -
Mine is 12” x 12” -
With slots every 1/2” for cutting

Where you can get it -

You should check your Local Quilt Shop and your favorite suppliers -
As prices do vary - and some items may be on sale - or not - ;))

June Tailor - here -

Some other sites that may or may not have stuff are -
JoAnn
Nancy's Notions
Clotilde

What I LIKE about this ruler -

The LARGE easy-to-read numbers around the edges -
The fact that the numbers read 0-1-2-3-4-5-6 from LEFT to RIGHT -
And from BOTTOM to TOP

What I DON’T like about this ruler -

Nothing comes to mind - ;))

How I use it to cut my sashings -

Layout to cut sashings -
0 - 12 from left to right -

The sashing strips will be cut - 1-1/2” x 6-1/2”

I put a little bit of purple highlighter tape -
On the slots every 1-1/2” -
1-1/2 - 3 - 4-1/2 - 6 - 7-1/2 - 9 - 10-1/2 - and 12
Because I have cut in the wrong slot on occasion -
And the visual reminder helps with that - ;))

I line up a heavy HORIZONTAL - CROSS line with the edge of the fabric -
And a line on my cutting mat -

I line up the VERTICAL slots with the lines on my cutting mat -

The “teardrop” cut-out should be centered over the corners of the markings -

The “teardrop” shape allows for my rotary cutter to “engage” -
I use the blue Dritz kind that is “pressure-sensitive” -

As a Lefty -
I usually measure and rotary cut from RIGHT to LEFT -
But - after I straightened the edge at the "0" slot -
The FIRST strip is just easier for me to cut at the 6-1/2” mark -
Than it is to do the math - to figure out which slot to use -
If I were to count from the right side -
Yeah - even I avoid math sometimes - ;))

Now to sub-cut that strip into 1-1/2” strips -
Turn the strip so that it goes sideways -
And - starting at the RIGHT end -
Cut in each of the marked slots -
Including the last slot to trim the RIGHT edge -

Slick - huh?

And - yeah - they DO measure 1-1/2” x 6-1/2”

Would I recommend this ruler to other Left-Handed Quilters?
YES

LHQ - Salad Spinner

For those scraps too small to run through the washer -

Or for 5" charm squares -

I use my salad spinner -

To PRE-WASH them - ;))

Add some water - detergent -
And the scraps -

Add some more water -
Spin them around -
Suds them up real well -

Move to the sink -
‘Cuz I forgot how messy it gets - ;))

Dump the soapy water -
Replace it with rinse water -
And rinse them -

Dump the water -
And spin them semi-dry -

Blot with a paper towel -
Press them dry -

All with a minimum of fraying - ;))

LHQ - Review - Ruler - O'LIPFA (R) Lip Edge Ruler - 5 x 24

LEFT-HANDED QUILTING - Review - O'LIPFA® Lip Edge Ruler - 5"x24"
============
Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.
============

Today I want to show you a REALLY cool little ruler -

That Left-Handed Quilters can use - hassle-free - ;))

My kind of ruler!! ;))

My opinions are based on my experience with this product - your results may vary.
I think that about covers it - if I missed something - let me know.
I am not a lawyer - and I am just trying to cover my a$$. ;)).
===

I use this particular ruler quite often -
But I haven’t done a proper REVIEW yet -
It is a VERY handy ruler -

It’s called the -
O’LIPFA® LIP EDGE RULER
Model 11111 - 5” x 24”
Made by O’Lipfa - www.olipfa.com
Made in the USA

It comes in an 18" length -
But I personally prefer the longer - 24" - one -
Just my personal preference - ;))

Description -
The bottom of the ruler has two sets of numbers -
I use the bottom row - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5
And sometimes put stickers on the other numbers -
To cover them up - if they get in my way - ;))

The lines are easy to see -
Solid lines on the half-inch marks -
Thinner solid lines on the quarter-inch marks -
And dashes on the eighth-inch marks -

NOTE - this is similar to the Omnigrid -
But somehow - not nearly as “cluttered” to me -
Just my opinion - I could be wrong - ;))

Where you can get it -

You should check your Local Quilt Shop and your favorite suppliers -
As prices do vary - and some items may be on sale - or not - ;))

Or you can check Amazon - here -

What I LIKE about this ruler -

I like that it has a lip at the top edge -
That hooks on the end of the cutting mat -
Kinda like a “T-square” -
Line up the ruler markings with the mat -
And it won’t slip -

What I DON’T like about this ruler -

Nothing comes to mind - ;))

How I use it to Straighten an edge -

Fold the fabric with the bulk of it to the LEFT -
Line up the ruler -
Hooking the lip edge -
And cut along the LEFT edge -

How I use it to cut a 45-degree diagonal -

At the bottom of the ruler -
It has markings for 45-degree lines -
And 60-degree lines -
Going in BOTH directions -
We LEFTIES can use the ones -
That go from the BOTTOM LEFT CORNER -
To the TOP RIGHT -

To use the 45-degree line -
Starting at the RIGHT end of your strip -
Line up the bottom of your strip -
Along the 45-degree line of the ruler -
And cut along the LEFT side -

Same goes for the 60-degree line -
Just use the 60-degree line - ;))

Would I recommend this ruler to another Left-Handed Quilter?
YES

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

P.S. BOB has a fun idea - check it out - here - ;))

TUSAL - 7/19/12

I have joined over 380 other stitchers in Daffycat’s TUSAL -

A Totally Useless Stitch-A-Long

To play the game -

I have to fill my glass container -

With saved thread clippings -

Or ORTS - Old Ratty Threads -

Fabric trimmings -

Stitching cast-offs -

And then -

On the New Moon -

Take a picture of the ORTS in my jar -

Post it to my blog -

And label the Totally Useless posts with “TUSAL” -

Done - done - done - done - and done - ;))

Some of you may have noticed that I have a NEW ORT JAR - ;))

My other Ort Jar bit the dust -
Poor thing fell off the back of my little TV tray/table -

The lid is OK -
So now I have an extra lid -
For the other jars that I have of the same size -

And I was able to salvage some of the orts -
But I wasn’t about to go through the glass chips for the rest of them -

Now we’ll see how long my new jar lasts - ;))

LHQSQ - Blocks - 39 - 44 - PREP

Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.
============

More 6” sampler blocks -

That you can make using -

2-1/2” squares -

HST that FINISH at 2” -

Strips - cut 1-1/2” x 2-1/2” -

4-Patches that FINISH at 2" -

And QST that FINISH at 2” -

Three across and three down -

Variations of the basic NINE-PATCH -

The sewn block will MEASURE 6-1/2” -

And FINISH at 6” -

===

This next group of blocks -

Needs a bunch of QST units -

Light/medium -

Light/dark -

Medium/dark -

So I thought that I would use Triangulations -
Like I did - here -

And make a bunch to play with -

Just make sure that you print out the QST ones that will FINISH at 2” -
12 QST squares per page -
24 QST units per page -

Then I pulled a dark - a medium - and a light -
From my stash -

And a couple of sheets of Triangulations -

And made these -

On the striped one -
Four were different -
20 went across -
4 went down -

So I went back to the sheet -
To see what happened -

And they all go the same direction -
EXCEPT the two on the top -
And the two on the bottom -
I marked them with an “X” -

Gotta watch that with stripes -

Anyway -

Pressed them all open -
All ready to match up -

Matched them -

AND -

Do see anything wrong?

Top right -
The medium/dark and light/dark is OK -

Bottom left -
The light/medium and light/dark is OK -

But -

Top left -
The medium/dark and the light/medium -
When matched -
Have the medium sides touching -

CRAP!!

But - you wanna know a trick??

If you want one “unit” to switch sides -

Sew it on the OTHER side - ;))

Watch -

I paired two 1-1/2” strips -

A light and a medium -

And - using the Companion Angle -
By Darlene Zimmerman -

Cut a test set -

Lined up the ruler at the 2” line -

Remember what I said -

About the fabric on the TOP -

As you sew it -

Being on the RIGHT side -

When you open it up? -

Take a look at one of the Triangulation sets -

The paper is on the side next to the LIGHT -

And you can see the seam line on the BOTTOM LEFT -

So if you flip it over -

It is actually getting sewn -

With the MEDIUM on top -

So when you open it up -

The MEDIUM is on the RIGHT side -

WHAT IF -

I sewed on the OTHER SIDE of the triangle -
That would switch the side the MEDIUM was on -
Right??

Top row - sew BOTTOM RIGHT side of the triangle -
Bottom row - sew TOP RIGHT side of the triangle -
NOW it will match a medium/dark unit - ;))

Anyway -

I made a bunch the OTHER way -

Pressed them all open -
Matched them up -

And - if I leave the paper on -
Until I get them together -

They come out -
Right ON! - ;))

So -

That should get me started -

But I don't know yet -

Which ones I need to match -

Or what other "puzzle pieces" I need -

So I won't sew any of them together -

Until I get there - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
