Design Wall Monday - 4/1/13

DESIGN WALL MONDAY - 4/1/13
Check out all of us who link up with Judy L. at Patchwork Times on Mondays.
We have some awesome stuff on our walls!
Well, THEY do - ME - not so much sometimes - ;))
===

So this past week -

I finished ALL of my UFOs!! -

Haha - ;))

You probably didn’t fall for that one -

Considering what day this is -

But I did ALMOST get the borders on the Folk Art Christmas Tree - ;))

Folk Art Christmas Tree - HERE -
Folk Art Christmas - by Cindy Taylor Oates - (c) Taylor Made Designs -

Wednesday - I finished the Machine Applique -

You still can’t really tell from the front photo -
Except for a slight puckering in the background -

My Machine Applique tends to “pucker” if not stabilized -
But I didn’t bother to “stabilize” this one -
Because I used a very pretty “white on white” as the background fabric -
And it was a bit heavier weight than regular muslin -
And the applique pieces were fused -
So - all in all - a minimum of “puckering” - Yay!! -

Maybe you can see better -
If I show you the “dotted” lines on the back - ;))

===

Thursday - was a no-sewing day -
I spent some time rescheduling some posts -
Writing some other posts -
And “surfing” - ;))

===

Friday - I auditioned border fabrics -

Too many choices -
And none of them “tickled my fancy” -
So I set them all aside - ;))

I think that I will “ponder” for a while -
And probably wait until I decide to quilt it -

By that time I will have chosen a backing -
And - depending on how much fabric I have -
And how much I need -

I can decide how big to make the borders -
And what to use to make them - ;))

While I was futzing with that -

I prewashed a bunch of fabric -
To be ironed later - ;))

Then I made the “Heart” for my Memory Quilt -
And the scrap card - ;))

===

Saturday - I pulled out the embroidered Christmas blocks -

That KatieM sent me - HERE -

I decided to try to sash them with “geese” -
Like Linda - HERE - did on her Christmas Snowman Snuggle Quilt - HERE -

So I dug out my copy of Billiie Lauder’s Quick Quilt Tricks booklet -
For her method of making four Flying Geese blocks at one time -
I have seen other “no-waste” instructions on the internet -
But hers seem to make more sense to me - ;))

Anyway -

I made a “test” set -
Having learned my lesson years ago -
With some “circles” - (Hi - LindaJ) - ;))

The fabric and pencil didn’t play nice -
When I was marking the first set of squares -
But they looked pretty good -
When I laid them on top of one of the embroidered squares -
(The white peeking out in the corners is part of the square) -

===

So Sunday I made some more -
And decided to back the squares with freezer paper -
To stabilize them when I marked them -
Which seemed to help -

But I must have messed up somehow -
Because when I measured them -

I don’t know if you can see real well -
The plastic ruler doesn’t play nice -
With my overhead lights -

But I’m short in the TOP LEFT corner -

And in the BOTTOM RIGHT corner -
On this one -

Oh, crap!! -

And that’s as far as I got - ;))

===

It was weird playing with Christmas blocks on Easter Sunday -

Buy - hey - a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do - ;))

And now that it is the First Day of April -

I will set the Christmas stuff aside until the 25th -

To be worked on once again - ;))

Today I want to work on my LHQSQ -
Left-Handed Quilter Sampler Quilt -

I only have 19 more blocks to go -

The block patterns are all printed out -

And they have been calling my name - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

I too have a sorry time making flying geese. We had Billy teach a class for us here and she's just a joy and it all makes sense when you see her do it. Your project looks great.

Thanks! I REALLY like Billie Lauder's tricks - and she has a bunch of them. Her "Four geese at a time" is one of my favorites - and I have used it before - successfully. I think I messed up this time in marking the center line on the back of the light squares - it only takes a smidge for me to come up short - ;))

Will you try the geese again---just to be sure? No way to fudge that other one in? I've mostly done her Puss in the Corner, 4 patches and nine patches, faux log cabin too. Can't say that I have tried her geese deal though I might as I have some cyclone blocks started and in the abandoned blocks pile from various sources.

Yeah - I'll try them again - probably "unsew" the ones that are short and see if I can fudge them a bit. I think I messed up drawing the center line. I used a "special" thingy - got some glare on the plastic from my overhead lights - and may not have centered it "just right". I HAVE done them before - her way - and been successful - but that was a long time ago - and I THOUGHT that I used the "special" thingy. Maybe I didn't - ;))

Even when you mark each piece with a template and sew by hand, sometimes they don't come out as you expect. I am often reminded that fabric is forgiving.

Thanks for the reminder - I just wish that it would be more cooperative at times - and that I could me more accurate - ;))

"I finished all my UFOs" said nobody ever.

Yeah - I know - especially me - ;)) I LOVE my UFOs - they give me LOTS of choices - depending on what I feel like playing with on any particular day. I hope I NEVER finish them all - ;))

I can't tell from your picture which technique you're using and the pic doesn't enlarge if I click it. If you're using the left page...then I don't have a solution for you. But if you're using the right page I have a pretty good idea what goes wrong. I've found that the placement of the smaller squares on the big square seems to be the problem. Not so much the line on the back. You have to make sure the two sides of the small block is lined up perfectly with the edges of the large block. Pin to hold them there!!
Since I get a bit long-winded I'll do a tute tomorrow and show you how I make mine. It really does work when all the stars align. heehee
Or you could do it like I did and paper-piece them and they'll turn out perfect every time. ;o) lol

Sorry - but the photos won't enlarge if you click on it because I re-size mine down before I post them - to save on my Picasa Web Album storage space. I ran out of space once with larger photos and their fees for extra storage are more than I want to pay - ;))
I'm using Billie's Method #2 - Right page #19 - and was pretty sure that I lined them up with the edges of the square - I even pinned them to keep them there!! Her diagrams are very clear - but a tutorial would be greatly appreciated!! Any and all help is ALWAYS appreciated!! - ;))
About the only way I EVER get my geese to come out right is to FPP them - why is that??? - ;))
