BOB's Tuesday Toast - 7/2/13

Here’s to Pattern Writers -
Who don’t furnish information on which direction to PRESS the seams in the block(s) -

May they realize that there are different ways to PRESS block seams -
And that quilters usually prefer the way that makes them “NEST” together -
When joined to other blocks - ;))

===

This is another one of my pet peeves - ;))

When I read a pattern -

I like to know which way to PRESS the seams in a block -

So that they “NEST” when I go to join them to their friends -

And some pattern writers do not provide that information -

And I REALLY wish that they would - ;))

I realize that it may not always be possible to “NEST” seams -

Depending on which way the blocks are rotated -

And -

Lucky for me -

I can usually figure out my own “PRESSING” scheme -

But it would be nice -

If the pattern writer provided the information -

So that I could spend my time -

SEWING instead - ;))

But then again - it’s probably just me - ;))

I could be wrong, but maybe some of those pattern designers don't know that nesting seams makes things fit better? (Look close at how well the points match on their cover photo...you might be surprised...) Or perhaps they just don't care. But I do like a pattern better when I know what I should be doing. :)

The only place I have ever seen a pressing diagram is in a Japanese block book. I think getting those seams organized is probably the most challenging aspect of quilt-making ... other than finding a large enough space for basting.

I press every seam as I construct both the block and the quilt. I have a friend who doesn't press until everything is done and maybe it's because of this - not knowing which direction to press for those nesting seams..... Maybe I should try just finger pressing as I go?????

My favorite books and patterns provide pressing diagrams - but others do not. Sometimes quilt-making could be simplified - but it's the challenges that make it interesting - ;))

exactly!

The person who "wrote" the pattern for this present project of mine really dropped the ball and I have to keep looking at the previous row and even then get it wrong. Of course, that would be ME, LOL.

I figure that the person who wrote the pattern has ALREADY made the quilt - and is the best person to KNOW which way to press the seams - since they ALREADY had to deal with the issue. I just wish that they would let us in on their secret(s). We bought the pattern so that we could see how they made the quilt - so why leave out that part? - ;))

And I REALLY TRY to get my seams to nest - better matches - better corners - better points - BUT - if they don't nest right - I don't fret about it anymore - life is too short. I give it my BEST TRY - and let it go at that. If one of my quilts has a bit of bulk in certain places - or flipped seams - no one will care a hundred years from now - if the quilt is even around by then - ;))
