LHQ - International Left-Handed Quilters Anonymous

INTERNATIONAL LEFT-HANDED QUILTERS ANONYMOUS

==========

I once mentioned that I thought that we needed to start our very own "International Left-Handed Quilters Association".  (ILHQA)

I've changed my mind - I think we need to call it -

INTERNATIONAL LEFT-HANDED QUILTERS ANONYMOUS.

Then we could have a meeting online - and I could say -

Hello, my name is Kitty - and I'm a Left-Handed Quilter.

And then you could say -

Hello, Kitty!

=========

Sorry - I'm in a goofy mood today - and I've always wanted to say that - but it's kinda hard to work into a conversation!

And - I'm curious - just how many left-handed quilters are out there in blogland?  Hundreds?  Thousands?  Millions?  (No, Kitty - it's just you and your six followers!)

So - leave me a comment and answer two questions for me - if you would, please -

1.  Are you a lefty?
2.  What gives you the most trouble in the right-handed world of quilting?

Thanks -

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

Hi Kitty,
I could really relate to your previous blog about losing your 1/4inch. Happens to me too often! I'm as left-handed as you can get and I have the most trouble with my rotary cutting skills. I do everything "bass akwards".

Ah, you are so funny! It sounds like an intro to AA but I can say, we leftys are all in our right minds! What's more, back in my day it was all punishable by beating. Therefore, those who held on were either more stubborn or more unable to change. I am very strongly BOTH!
I would say the very worst thing is left-handed scissors made by right-handers that reverse the blades so that you are pushing them apart when you try to cut. Give me a pair of righty scissors with a neutral grip any day.
Thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.:>)

I'm a lefty! I would love to join your ILHQA! I've noticed teachers don't teach both right and left ways. Well, I did found one instructor and I was highly impress - Mimi Dietrich! Now most righties expect a left handed instructor to teach right handed though, funny huh? I can teach both ways, but want a class of just lefties once! :)

Hello Kitty! (Yes, that WAS fun to say!) I'm a lefty but don't have any problems in a right handed quilt world because surprisingly (and only in quilting), I'm completely ambidextrous when it comes to quilting! I can rotary cut both right and left handed which is convenient --- I never have to "turn" the fabric, just switch hands! The best advice I ever saw was from Alex Anderson (a fellow lefty) who said that when she teaches, she tells righties to stand facing her and then do exactly what she does -- the "mirror image" positioning takes care of the differences in working with opposite hands.

Thanks, Vivian - I'm glad that works for you. It doesn't work for me - I do that and mentally "reverse" whatever is being done - and I'm right back where I started - ;))

Hi Kitty! I looked for a blog like this awhile back and didn't find it. You are the answer to my prayers! I am not only a beginning (very frustrated and depressed) quilter, but I also have a condition called Ehlers-Danlos, which means that all my joints are unstable. I have a difficult time cutting straight lines! I don't seem to have the strength in my hands to hold the ruler down and it just seems that things shift while I'm cutting. I plan to read completely through your blog and hopefully find some tips.

Thanks for being out there!! I'll be a frequent visitor!

Hello Kitty!! My name is Donna and I am a left handed quilter and relatively new to the addiction. I struggle with pinning and using scissors. My right handed quilting friends have shown me how they pin pieces, or seams but it is completely backwards. I cannot put a pin in fabric with my right hand to save my life. Their suggestions to pin it and turn it over doesn't work. The pins are on the bottom of the fabric and not easy to see. I have worked out a method that seems to work, but would love to know how other LHQ'ers pin.
Can I rant a little about scissors?? I must have been pushed thru kindergarten, because there is no possible way I passed using scissors class!!! A couple of years ago, my sister and I took up scrapbooking and cardmaking. Any intricate scissor work took my at least 3 times longer to do, if I could do it at all. She would tell me it looked painful just to watch me cutting something.
I do have a pair of LH scissors for fabrics that does make things easier, but I still have mostly RH scissors, that I struggle to use.
We live in a right handed world But we shall adapt and overcome!!!

Hello Donna! You are a "no-reply" commenter so I am unable to contact you directly. Regarding pins and scissors - and how "I" do it - please check out the page/tab at the top of my blog "LHQ - Basics" - and the post "LHQ - Supplies" - or the link below - ;))

Hello Kitty, hey that is fun to say, lol! I am a "Left Handed Quilter" from Australia & I'm pushing 67 yrs old so I'm a "Late Bloomer" as far as Quilting is concerned. But, I have found my way to your Blog & I was hoping that there was a "Newsletter Sign Up Area" I could find in order to sign myself up to hear all your Quilting News........But, I have found your Blog, so that's good enough for now. I can so relate to the problems you have experienced in the past regarding Quilting Classes; its like we "Lefties" are from another Planet or something. I have resolved myself to the fact that the World was designed by Right Handed People & we Lefties just have to work things out for ourselves. I'm so pleased I have found your Blog & I REALLY LIKE what I'm seeing on here so far, so I will be an "avid follower" & look forward to learning all I can along the way. Warmest Regards, Zoey 🙂🙃
