A few more twosies -

For my Sundance Bargello

This time I sewed the first pair of strips - times three -

And one of the second pair -

I may continue sewing twosies -

Or make some foursies and eightsies -

As I go along -

To break the monotony -

Now that I have one full strata made -

I can check it as I go -

To make sure that I don't mix them up - ;))

More twosies -

For my Sundance Bargello

Led to some "foursies" -

And some "eightsies" -

And so on -

Next thing I knew -

The first strata of 20 strips was done -

This set has some REALLY pretty batiks in the mix -

It's going to make a beautiful bargello - ;))

Some twosies -

Was about all I sewed yesterday -

For my Sundance Bargello

After I finished my "chores" -

I decided to sew one complete strata -

To have a visual reference for the order of the strips -

Before I try to "assembly-line" sew the rest of the strata -

But only got 6 "twosies" sewn so far -

Maybe today I can finish sewing the first strata -

I REALLY like the gradation on this set - ;))

Pressing -

Was on the agenda yesterday -

First I pressed the strata -

For my Northern Woods Bargello -

I needed an EVEN number of rows -

Because I pressed the odd-numbered rows up -
And the even-numbered rows down -

So that they will nest nicely when I cut the strata -
And shift the rows up or down a notch -

The easiest way to press them that way -

Is to press the "odd" numbered strips "out" from the center of the strip -

It's like a "two for one" -

You get the one seam pressed UP -
And the other seam pressed DOWN at the same time -

I pressed each of the four strata separately -

Then sewed one pair into a tube - then the other - making two tubes -

And folded them in half for cutting later -

By that time my back was telling me to sit down -
And find something else to do -

So I pulled out the Sundance flat packs -

And pressed them -

Then draped the first set over the front rail on the longarm -

Then I figured that as long as I was pressing one set -

That I might as well press the rest of them -

Now I can sew the "twosies" for all four sets as I go along -

Or make one strata of all twenty strips -

So that I have a visual aid to keep them all in order -

I haven't decided yet -

But it will probably be the latter -

Just because I REALLY like the blending of this batch -

And wouldn't want to mess it up -

As Gene said in a comment the other day -
It never occurred to me before, but someone at the company chose to put the fabrics in that order. So, why not use them that way?
I totally agree - why not? -

Sorting them in a pleasing order would be like reinventing the wheel -

It's already been done - ;))

No sewing yesterday -

I put things back to the way I left them the other day -

For my Northern Woods Bargello -

And didn't get any sewing done -

I'm so glad that I didn't add those extra strips -

And realized my mistake -

Before I had to unsew two long seams - ;))

Extra strips -

I thought I needed two extra strips -

For my Northern Woods Bargello

Two sets of twenty strips will make one strata -

And if I added one more strip to each one -

I'd have an "odd" number of strips -

Which would make it easier to press them -

So I "raided" a pack of batik strips -

Thinking I had two of each -

And that it would be easy to find a couple that would work -

Turned out that they were all "singles" -

So I found two that are rust/green with leaves -

The top two in the photo below -

They are not identical -

But I think they are close enough -

And by the time I cut them into "slivers" -

Hopefully it won't be that noticeable -

That they aren't the same print -

===

That was what I planned to post today -

BUT THEN -

I thought I would double-check just to make sure -

And I found THIS POST

Where I was pressing my Imperial Bargello

And - it turns out that I was WRONG -

I need an EVEN number of rows -

Because I pressed the odd-numbered rows up -

And the even-numbered rows down -

So that they would nest nicely when I cut the strata -

And shifted the rows up or down a notch -

So - all of that "raiding" was for nothing -

And I can sew the sets into the two strata -

WITHOUT any extra strips -

Now I have to go back and edit my previous post -

To correct my mistake -

Oops!! - ;))

Lots of sewing -

On my Northern Woods Bargello

First I finished sewing the second set together -

Then the third set -

You can see the other two on the back rail -
On the right side -
I folded the top one back so you can see the one underneath -

Then I sewed the fourth set -

On the back rail -
On the left side -
You can see the GREEN/ORANGE strips of the first three sets -

I need to sew two sets together for one strata -

And make two strata -

EDIT UPDATE -  I need an EVEN number of strips in each strata -

So ignore this last part -

Then I want to find another two matching strips to add to them -

So that I have an ODD number of strips in each strata -

That will help when I go to press them - ;))

Second set -

Of twosies -

For my Northern Woods Bargello

Are on the front rail -

I laid them out the same way I did the first set -

But - as extra insurance - and a visual reminder -

I draped the first set of twenty strips over the back rail -

To make sure that I keep them all in the same order - ;))

First half -

Of the first strata is sewn -

For my Northern Woods Bargello

This is only the first set of twenty strips -

So I have three more sets to sew -

Before I can pair them up -

To make two 40-strip strata -

To cut up for the bargello - ;))

Sunday sewing -

While I was waiting for the storm to hit -

I decided that I wanted to make TWO bargello quilts -

One using Northern Woods

And one using Sundance

So I opened the first flat pack of Northern Woods

I didn't want to "overthink" it -

So I spread out the top row of twenty strips -

As they came off the "roll" -

Paired them up -

And sewed them into "twosies" -

These strips will be the first half of the first strata -

And they should make a pretty bargello - ;))

We're fine -

We got a little rain -

But no flooding and we didn't lose power -

And we had an EARTHQUAKE!! -

But no damage in our area -

I was afraid we might lose power -

So I planned to turn my computer off at noon - just in case -

Until then - I sewed - as stress-reliever therapy -

And I'll show you tomorrow how far I got -

At noon I turned off the computer -

And we watched TV weather reports -

Around 2PM - we decided to take naps - before the worst was to hit -

Then at 2:41PM I felt a SHARP JOLT -

And the cellphone EMERGENCY ALERTS started blaring -

EARTHQUAKE - originally 6.0 - less than 20 miles away -
Later downgraded to 5.1 - with damage in Ojai -

We scrambled to the interior bathroom to wait for aftershocks -

But luckily we didn't feel any -

Needless to say -

There was no more "napping" after that -

We turned the TV back on -

And watched as the storm veered off to the EAST -

Leaving us on the western edge -

With just a little rain -

Anyway - we eventually went to bed --

And woke up to see the reports of downed trees and submerged cars -

We were LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!! -

It could have been SO much worse -

Time out -

We are expecting a humongous storm this weekend -

In Southern California -

And may lose power -

So I may not be posting for the next couple of days -

If it's just rain - that will be greatly appreciated -

But if it turns into flooding - then we may have a problem -

We are preparing the best we can -

So we'll just have to wait and see what happens -

Now - so this post has a photo -

Here's a pretty one from a little while back -

I'll be back as soon as I can - ;))

More of the same -

I lost my sewing mojo -

If you find her -

Please send her home -

 I haven't even opened these packages yet - ;))

Still the same -

I don't know where my sewing mojo went -

But yesterday was the same as the day before -

Except that I got another vote for Northern Woods

So now it's Northern Woods - 3 - and Sundance - 2 -

If you count Gene's double vote for Northern Woods -

If not - it's a tie -

And I get to decide -

And I like them both - ;))

Thursday, August 17, 2023

Same -

As yesterday -

No sewing today -

But the votes are in -

I got two votes for "Sundance" -

And two votes for "Northern Woods" -

After Gene voted twice to tie it up - LOL -

So maybe I'll make them both - ;))

Squirrel -

I swear I see them EVERYWHERE -

I was putting something away -

And "accidentally" opened a drawer with some flat packs in it -

So I took a moment and explored what was in the drawer -

I thought that either one (or both) of these would make a pretty Bargello -

The one on the left is Northern Woods

The one on the right is Sundance

I have two of each -

So I have enough to make another one like my Imperial Bargello -

This would be a "long-term" project -

Since it will take me a while to sew the strata -

And cut the strips - then sew it all back together -

And since it has been so hot here lately -

I've tried to not run the a/c or the longarm during "peak" hours -

So this would be a good "non-longarm" project -

That - and I'm stalling -

Because I still don't know how I want to quilt -

My Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers - LOL -

So - which flat pack do you like the best? - ;))

Binding -

Yesterday I made the binding for three quilts -

The MUSTARD/BROWN is for both -

My Karma Churn Dash

And my Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers

The RED/RED is for Hear Wave

I get on a roll and like doing the same thing -

Like making binding -

For several quilts at the same time -

It's sort of "assembly-line" -

And FEELS a little more efficient -

Than doing a quilt from start to finish -

Then starting over - ;))

Cutting -

Was on the agenda yesterday -

So I cut binding strips for three quilts -

Karma Churn Dash - MUSTARD/BROWN -

Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers - MUSTARD/BROWN -

Hear Wave - RED/RED -

And then a couple extra MUSTARD ones for my Interweave - Nostalgia

I think that one will look good with a MUSTARD backing -

So I'll have the MAIN binding color to match -

Then I can decide later what color I want to use for the "flange" - ;))

Fiddling -

Bits and pieces -

But they all add up -

First I basted the top zipper to the backing -

For my Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers

But I haven't loaded it yet -

Then I did a little staging -

I laid out the Hear Wave top and the RED branches backing -

To see how much RED solid I need to get it up to size -

So I can get that cut and ready to sew -

Then I took a photo of the BROWN "flange" fabric -

To go with the MUSTARD main binding color -

That I'll use for my Karma Churn Dash

I have another darker RED solid that I think I'll use for the "flange" -

On my Hear Wave

So - after I do the MATH -

I can cut those strips - and make the bindings -

I might even make some MUSTARD/BROWN binding -

For my Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers

While I'm at it -

Those colors will work for that one, too - ;))

Saturday, August 12, 2023

Same -

As the day before -

No sewing again yesterday -

So no change on the quilting/sewing front -

My Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers is up next -

But I still need to baste the sippers zippers* to the backing -

And get that loaded and then cut the batting -

Before I can load the top - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

*Thanks, Katie - ;))

A little sewing -

Yesterday I sewed the Scrap Cards and Heart

For my Interweave - Nostalgia

With 40 different fabrics - I needed two index cards -

But didn't think to split them 20/20 before sewing them -

I had already sewn the first one with 30 -

When I realized what I did - LOL -

Oh, well - it doesn't really matter - it's just for me -

Then I made a label for my Karma Churn Dash

I also chose the "flange" fabric -
But forgot to take a photo of it -
I'll try to do that tomorrow -

It's nothing exciting -
Just a DARK BROWN tone-on-tone -
To go with the GOLD backing fabric -
That I want to use for the MAIN binding color -

So I'll take a photo when I get those strips cut -

And I think the next one that I want to quilt -

Is my Batik Bento Boxes - Glowing Embers - 48" x 60" - 2020 -

I think the left over MUSTARD backing will be big enough -
Without having to add a spacer strip -

Then I can use the left over RED backing for my Hear Wave -
And add some solid RED to get it up to size -

At least that's the plan - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

Thursday, August 10, 2023

No sewing yesterday -

I spent most of the day doing "chores" -

But I did pet some fabric -

The left overs from my Interweave - Nostalgia

On the cookie sheet -

Should be enough to make the Scrap Card and a Heart

So today I can play with that -

And maybe choose a "flange" fabric -

For my Karma Churn Dash binding -

And maybe decide which top I want to quilt next - ;))

It's a top! -

My Interweave - Nostalgia

Is a top! -

Ta Dah! - ;))

Left -

Middle -

Right -

I love the "old-fashioned" florals and subtle colors in this one -

It's very soft and calming -

And now I'm back up to 30 tops -

That need to be quilted - ;))
