I REALLY don’t like cutting the pieces -
And then making -
ONE block at a time -
SO -
For the next batch of blocks -
I made this -
Just kidding - ;))
Actually they all came out to this -
5 light squares
4 light/dark HST
4 light/medium HST
2 dark squares
3 medium squares
10 light/dark QST
17 light/medium QST
45 puzzle pieces -
Enough for 5 blocks - ;))
And because the finished blocks -
Will be scattered across the quilt top -
I’m not too worried about -
The sameness -
Of the fabrics -
Might regret that decision later -
But for now -
It works in my head - ;))

LHQSQ - Adding QST to the mix
EDIT UPDATE -
Since posting this post -
I designed a LEFT-HANDED ruler to cut HST and QST -
LEFT-HANDED!! -
No more Flippin' rulers!! -
I call it a LEFT-EZE™ Rule -
Check it out on my other blog - HERE - ;))
===
Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.
============
My Left-Handed Quilter's Sampler Quilt -
LHQSQ - See the page/tab above -
So far -
Is comprised of 6” sampler blocks -
That you can make using -
2-1/2” squares -
HST that FINISH at 2” -
Strips - cut 1-1/2” x 2-1/2” -
And 4-Patches that FINISH at 2” -
Three across and three down -
Variations of the basic NINE-PATCH -
The sewn block will MEASURE 6-1/2” -
And FINISH at 6” -
===
Now I’m going to add another element -
QUARTER SQUARE TRIANGLES (QST) that FINISH at 2” -
Because -
One half of a Quarter Square Triangle - One UNIT -
Measures the same as one half of a HST -
And when the two halves - the UNITS - are sewn together -
The QST -
Will measure - 2-1/2” square -
And FINISH at 2” -
Just like everything else - ;))
===
There are a number of different ways to make QST -
You can buy the die -
Or you can use Triangles on a Roll -
It’s really cool stuff -
I have several different sizes -
The top roll - Green -
Will make 735 -
QST - 2” finished squares
The second one - Red -
Will make 1200 -
HST - 1” finished squares
The bottom one is -
What I have left of the roll -
That makes -
HST - 2” finished squares
They come in real handy -
When I only need a couple of blocks -
And not a bunch of “multiples” -
===
Or you can use Triangulations -
Like I did - here -
Just make sure that you print out the QST ones that will FINISH at 2” -
===
Or you can cut 1-1/2” strips -
And use the Companion Angle ruler -
By Darlene Zimmerman -
Like this -
I layered a light and medium fabric - right sides together -
And cut out some triangles -
LEFT-HANDED -
Starting at the RIGHT end of the strip -
Line up the BOTTOM of the strip on the “2” line (2” FINISHED)
Cut one -
Cut UP the LEFT side and DOWN the RIGHT side -
Move the ruler to the LEFT - FLIP it up -
And line up the TOP of the strip on the “2” line (2” FINISHED) -
To cut the second one -
Cut UP the LEFT side -
Cut two sets -
The tops of the triangles are flat -
And they look like they won’t fit -
But they DO - and you have -
One less dog-ear to trim - ;))
Stitch them up -
BUT -
When I sewed them together -
I flipped them over -
So that the lighter fabric was on top -
And sewed from the top of the triangle -
To the base -
That’s how this -
Turned into this - ;))
Gotta watch that -
Whichever fabric is on TOP -
When you sew them together -
Will be on the RIGHT -
When you open them up - ;))
And when the two halves - the UNITS - are sewn together -
The QST will measure 2-1/2” -
And FINISH at 2” -
Just like everything else - ;))
===
I love how there are SO many different ways -
To do the SAME thing -
I think that is what makes quilting so much FUN -
So - try everything -
Find a method that YOU like -
And USE that one - ;))
===
In the next batch of blocks -
Sometimes the two halves - the UNITS - of the QST -
Will be different - the QST will be “mixed” -
So be sure to check the photo -
To see which part of the QST is which color/fabric -
===
For simplicity -
I will just list the number of individual QST -
That you will need to complete the block -
How you choose to cut and sew them -
Is entirely up to you - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

LHQSQ - Sashings & Cornerstones - Part 2
Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.
============
My Left-Handed Quilter's Sampler Quilt -
LHQSQ - See the page/tab above -
Needs sashing and cornerstones -
First let me say that -
I am NOT the one who invented this -
I wish I knew who did -
I’d give her a HUGE hug - ;))
And -
I am NOT the only one who does it this way -
Some of us have been doing sashings and cornerstones -
This way FOR years -
But it may be NEW to you -
SO - This Is How I Do It - ;))
When I cut the sashing fabric -
I cut a couple of sashing strips 6-1/2” x WOF -
Sub-cut one into the 1-1/2” strips -
And left one alone -
6-1/2” x WOF -
Then I cut a strip 1-1/2” from the Brown #2 -
1-1/2” x WOF -
For cornerstones -
Sewed them together -
Pressed the seam AWAY from the darker Brown -
And then sub-cut the strip set into 1-1/2” strips -
Like so -
Take a few of the blocks -
And some plain sashes -
And some sashes with the cornerstones attached -
Put them up on the wall -
Do you see what I see?
If I take off a couple of the top sashing strips -
Do you see this?
Because these blocks will be set “on-point” -
I can add the plain sash to the lower right side -
Pressing toward the sashing strip -
And then add the sash with the cornerstone -
To the lower left side -
Which is WHY -
I pressed AWAY from the darker Brown -
When I sewed the Brown strip to the lighter one -
All sewn and pressed -
The first couple up on the wall -
===
I like how this method simplifies construction -
All I have to do now -
Is get the final layout -
And sew the blocks together - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

Quilter BOB's BFF
Most of you already know that -
BOB is my alter-ego -
B!tchy Old Broad -
And that since BOB doesn't want to scare her nicey-nice quilty readers -
She usually rants on her very own blog -
Quilter BOB - here -
BUT -
Some rants need to be posted on THIS blog -
I call those rants -
Quilter BOB's BFF -
Quilter BOB's B!tch Fest Friday -
Or any other day that ends in “Y” - ;))
BOB’s version of “B!tch and Stitch” -
Or is it “Stitch and B!tch” -
BOB can never remember - ;))
Anyway -
Today’s rant is about HANDICAP -
If you would rather not read this rant -
You might be just the person who should read it -
I might be talking to you - ;))
So - let me ask you -
When you see a fat, old woman on a scooter -
What do you see?
Do you see a fat, old woman on a scooter -
Who - if she would just get off that scooter -
And walk instead of ride -
Would get some much-needed exercise -
And maybe not be so fat?
Do you?
Well - I don’t -
I see my friend -
Who cringes when someone says -
“That looks like fun!” -
Would they say that to her-
If she were in a wheelchair?
I see my friend -
Who WOULD walk -
If she COULD walk
I see my friend -
Who has a degenerative nerve disease -
And wears a leg brace -
And a diaper
I see my friend -
Who tries to hide her leg brace -
Under her long pants
I see my friend -
Who wears a leg brace -
Because the disease has made her leg virtually useless
I see my friend -
Who wears a diaper -
Because the disease has made her totally incontinent
I see my friend -
Who has been able to say “no” to a wheelchair -
So far
I see my friend -
Who sits patiently waiting for a handicap bathroom stall -
And wetting her pants -
While an able-bodied woman changes her clothes
I see my friend -
Who sits patiently waiting for a handicap bathroom stall -
And wetting her pants -
While an able-bodied woman corrals her children -
So that she can “use the facilities”
I see my friend -
Who sits patiently waiting for a handicap bathroom stall -
And wetting her pants -
While an able-bodied woman uses the stall -
Simply because it has more room -
Or because it was simply "available"
I see my friend -
Trapped in the bathroom -
Because the door opens “in” -
And she needs someone else -
To open the door for her
I see my friend -
Who no longer goes to quilt shows -
Because getting close enough to a booth -
To actually see anything -
Is like trying to “parallel park” a tank -
In quicksand (the crowd)
I see my friend -
Who occasionally runs into someone -
Who stops short in front of her -
Because the scooter has no brakes -
Think about it -
It’s like stopping a car -
By taking your foot off the gas -
You coast to a stop -
And hope you don’t hit anything
I see my friend -
Who no longer goes to quilt shows -
Because trying to get into a booth -
Is virtually impossible -
Even the larger booths -
Have narrow aisles
I see my friend -
Who knows that “wheelchair accessible” -
And “scooter accessible” -
Are two entirely different things
I see my friend -
Who no longer travels -
Because most motels and hotels -
Only have a few handicap rooms -
And she has trouble reserving one -
Because some knucklehead posted a “tip” -
That - if you want a room with “more room” -
To reserve a handicap room -
And another knucklehead likes handicap rooms -
Because they have bigger bathrooms
I see my friend -
Who sits patiently waiting for the knuckleheads -
Of this world -
To need a scooter -
That’s what I see -
My friend

Dead Iron
Aw man!!
I KNEW the day would come -
SOMEDAY!!
But why NOW?!?!?
Yesterday -
My iron died - ;((
I LOVED my iron -
It was LEFT-HANDED -
And EVERYTHING - ;))
She had the cord coming from the middle of her back -
That made her LEFT-HANDED to me. ;))
She looked OK in the morning -
And she pressed a whole big length of fabric -
Before I had to fill her up again -
Then -
She started to LEAK -
BIG splotches -
ALL over -
She NEVER leaked -
WHAT was WRONG with her? -
I took a look -
She had a HOLE -
In her bottom!
How did THAT happen?
I didn't drop her -
There was no little piece of plastic -
On the floor -
Maybe it was just old age - ;))
Poor little iron -
She was such a GOOD little iron -
Had to empty her out -
And dig out her replacement -
Now I need -
A replacement for her replacement - ;))
And I had a hard enough time -
Finding the one I have -
So I need your help -
Do any of you know where I can get a new steam iron -
With NO AUTO-SHUT OFF -
And that doesn't cost a small fortune?
When I need to press something -
I want my iron to be ON!
I had a newer one and didn’t like it -
When I had been sewing for a while -
And tried to press something -
It had turned itself OFF!
That’s CRAP!!
I’m a grown-up -
And am perfectly capable of remembering -
To shut off my iron when I'm done -
I don't need it to do it FOR me - ;))
Anybody know where I can get -
An iron for a grown-up?
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
P.S. Go check out BOB’s two cents - it's on that peachy button over on the sidebar - you KNOW she has something to add - ;))

No-Reply Commenter - Another Reason Why
We all know that the #1 Reason for being a “No-Reply Commenter” -
Is NOT clicking the “Show Email Address” box on your Blogger Profile -
And we all know that the #1 Solution Is to CLICK the box - ;))
But did you know that -
You can CLICK the box -
And STILL come up as a “No-Reply Commenter”? -
It's TRUE -
If you leave a comment -
Using the “Name/Url” option -
You show as a "No-Reply Commenter" -
Try it out with a bloggy buddy -
CLICK the box on your Blogger Profile -
Then leave two comments on your buddy’s blog -
One using your Google Account -
And one using your Blogger “Name/Url” -
Ask your bloggy buddy if you come up as a “No-Reply” on either comment -
I’ll bet that you do on the second one - ;))

LHQSQ - Adding 4-Patches to the Mix
DESIGN WALL MONDAY -
Check out all of us who link up with Judy L. at Patchwork Times on Mondays.
We have some awesome stuff on our walls!
Well, THEY do - ME - not so much sometimes - ;))
============
Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.

===
Now I’m going to add another element -
4-Patches that FINISH at 2”
Because -
4 squares that are 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” -
When sewn together -
Into a 4-Patch -
Will measure 2-1/2” square -
And FINISH at 2” -
Just like everything else - ;))
===
You can cut them individually -
Or -
You can make strip sets -
Because -
2 strips that are 1-1/2” wide -
When sewn together -
Along the LONG side -
Can be cut into 1-1/2” segments -
And the segments can then be sewn -
Into a 4-Patch -
Which will FINISH at 2” square -
You can cut 4 segments from a 6-1/2” long strip set -
(1-1/2” x 4 = 6” plus some wiggle room)
Or 8 segments from a 12-1/2” long strip set -
(1-1/2” x 8 = 12” plus some wiggle room)
===
For simplicity -
I will just list the number of 4-Patches -
That you will need to complete the block -
How you choose to cut and sew them -
Is entirely up to you - ;))

I’ve just been slapping these up on the wall -
As I went along - any which way -
And so far - I have this -
I figured that -
Before I got too far along -
I should start adding the sashing strips -
My Way - tell ya about that later - ;))
But - before I could DO that -
I would have to decide WHICH fabric to use -
For the sashing strips - ;))
I had pictured the GOLD in my head -
And on EQ7 - ;))
But I also liked the BROWN and the GREEN -
But they all seemed a bit too DARK for me -
And I didn’t want a DARK quilt this time -
So I went LIGHTER -
MUCH lighter -
The WHITE-ON-WHITE - looked a little TOO light -
And the OFF-WHITE/TAN - looked like it would be JUST RIGHT -
UNTIL I took this photo -
Then my Block #16 - Friendship Star - looked funny -
There was NO contrast between the background and the sashing -
SO -
I thought about it some more -
And tried it AGAIN - ;))
Pulled ANOTHER brown from my stash -
Pulled a CARAMEL colored one -
Tried the GOLD again -
And still couldn’t decide -
SO -
I tried one more thing -
I tried them all on the couch -
Where the final quilt would “live” -
And the CARAMEL won -
I like how it looks with the pillows -
That already live on the couch - ;))
And Brown #2 matches the coffee table -
So guess which one I chose for the cornerstones - ;))
Looks a bit plain right now -
But the blocks promise me -
That they will add a BUNCH of COLOR - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
