DESIGN WALL MONDAY - 2/4/13
Check out all of us who link up with Judy L. at Patchwork Times on Mondays.
We have some awesome stuff on our walls!
Well, THEY do - ME - not so much sometimes - ;))
===
I spent SO much time last week -
Pushing paper -
And drafting and editing my Christmas Sudoku Quilt tutorial -
That I really didn’t get much else done - ;))
It wasn’t until I actually posted Part 1 on Saturday - HERE -
And scheduled Part 2 to go “live” on Sunday -
That I finally had a chance to SEW something -
So I made the Foundation Paper Pieced “Heart” -
For the Christmas Sudoku Quilt -
For my Memory Quilt -
It's not much -
But it’s SOMEthing - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

I’m still working on my version of “Easy Street” -
Bonnie Hunter’s Easy Street Mystery Quilt - HERE -
I call mine "Easy Street Detour" - ;))
============
Note - these instructions are written in LEFTISH.
If you are right-handed - just reverse the directions.

In between a bunch of “office” stuff this past week -
I did manage to get some sewing done - ;))
One Block B done -
The other 8 all pinned in sets -
64 Stacked Geese for Block A -
16 sets of 4 -
Another Block B -
With the "chunks" sewn in rows -
Like a regular 9-patch -
The rest of the Block Bs -
With the "chunks" sewn in rows -
And the rows pinned together in sets -
I still need to sew the last two seams -
But they are ready to go -
That’s when it started to get tedious again -
That’s when I decided to take another break -
And work on a little Sudoku Quilt idea I had -
See the little RED squares? -
Can you see how there is only ONE -
In each little 9-patch “Box”? -
And in each “Column”? -
And in each “Row”? -
Cool, huh?
That’s Sudoku - ;))
Let me know if you want me to do a tutorial -
If you do - please leave a comment below - ;))
I know you all hate the “word verification” -
But from what I’m seeing on blogs lately -
I’m not the only one with spam problems -
So don’t be afraid to hit that little circle thingy -
A BUNCH of times if you need to -
That’s what I do -
Because I can’t always read them either - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

I finished the 64 Turkey Combos - HERE -
Then I played with the 4-Patch Combos -
My version of Block B needs 9 sets of 4 -
Assembly line -
Sewed the 4-patch to the chocolate square -
In sets of 8 -
With the square on the bottom -
And the 4-Patch on top -
With the “constant” leading -
Made the 4-Patch Combos -
In sets of 4 -
Mine are a little matchy-matchy -
I was limited in my “backgrounds” in the beginning -
Not knowing where the mystery would end -
And not knowing that I would run out of “backgrounds” -
More than once - ;))
Anyway -
Got them all sewn together and then I made 3 piles -
Column A - 9 sets of 4 - 4-Patch Combos -
Column B - 9 sets of 4 - Turkey Combos -
Column C - 9 center squares
Then I chose my sets -
Just like from a Chinese restaurant menu -
One from Column A -
One from Column B -
One from Column C -
And I made a Block B -
As nothing more than a giant 9-patch -
And - because I watched the orientation of the 4-Patches -
When I made the 4-Patch Combos earlier -
As long as I keep a Square in the corner -
My Block B will have the 4-Patches going the “correct” way - ;))
Now I just have to make 9 of them -
Then I'll move on to the Block A “combos” -
I’m leaving the setting triangles and corners for last -
I have an idea for the borders that may or may not work -
So I want/need to play a little in EQ7 first - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

I'm still working on my version of “Easy Street” -
Bonnie Hunter’s Easy Street Mystery Quilt - HERE -
And I have mentioned before that -
My version has taken a slight detour - ;))
I substituted “Chocolate” for her “Purple” -
“Teal” for her “Turquoise” -
“Raspberry” for her “Limey/Apple Green” - ))
My “Gray/Constant” is a light “Lilac” -
My backgrounds are “Cream - Tan - Pink - Light Blue” -
Because I used most of my White/Black last year in Orca Bay - ;))
So - with my substitutions -
My “Easy Street” would have looked like this -
All of that“Raspberry” is a bit much for me -
I probably would have switched the “Chocolate” and “Raspberry” if I had known -
But that's part of the fun of a mystery -
It doesn't always come out the way you thought it would - ;))
And because I already had most of the stuff cut and sewn -
The challenge became - how to make it work for me - ;))
So I played around in EQ7 -
And came up with some ways to replace most of the “Raspberry” with “Chocolate” -
After checking to see if I actually had enough “Chocolate” left -
I decided on this one -
I think I’ll call it -
Easy Street Detour - ;))
My Corner blocks look like this -
My Setting Triangles look like this -
My Block A looks like this -
My Block B looks like this -
For those of you who might not know -
I don’t like sewing 25-patch blocks (or quilts) one row at a time -
Unless I HAVE to - ;))
I much prefer my “Chunk Method” - HERE -
So - if my math is correct -
Along with a few “single” units here and there -
I should be able to work these up as giant 9-patches -
If I make -
48 - 4-Patch Combos -
64 - Turkey Combos -
64 - Shaded 4-Patch Combos -
64 - Stacked Geese Combos -
I started with the Turkey Combos -
Because they just sounded delicious - ;))

Another episode of -
Leisurely Turtle Race to Christmas with Squirrels Allowed - ;))
===
Well - this is as far as I got -
Gingerbread ‘n Hearts needs borders and quilting -
And some Buttons and Bows - ;))
Gingerbread ‘n Hearts - (c) 1995 - Dinah’s Quilts & Accents - 18" x 21"
Linda J - here - and I worked out another trade -
So this one will be on its way to her after Christmas - as is -
Including the buttons and bows -
She may work it into a Christmas quilt of her own - ;))
The Folk Art Christmas Tree needs to be stitched down -
Then I need to do the borders and quilting -
Folk Art Christmas - by Cindy Taylor Oates - (c) Taylor Made Designs -
Folk Art Christmas Tree - 27" x 35-1/2" -
But I’ll worry about all of that after Christmas -
This is Christmas Eve -
And -
Santa’s coming - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
P.S.
This post was written and scheduled to go "live" today - before I learned that Linda - my bloggy buddy/friend and "Racing" partner had to have surgery recently and will be sidelined for awhile. I have decided to post my progress as scheduled - and because she's run into this little roadblock - We have declared a TIE in our First Annual Leisurely Turtle Race To Christmas With Squirrels Allowed. - ;))

I’m still working on the Folk Art Christmas Tree
Folk Art Christmas - by Cindy Taylor Oates - (c) Taylor Made Designs -
I fixed the Bird - ;))
Got the pattern face up -
Grouped them by color -
Got everything traced -
And decided to cut the parts as I needed them -
The trick was getting the layers right -
I didn’t want to fuse something down -
And THEN find out that something else -
Was supposed to go UNDER it - ;))
Almost there -
I’m taking my time -
And it’s coming along nicely -
Now it just needs the bow and the hand - ;))

I’ve been working on my LHQSQ blocks -
And have 60 of them up on the wall -
Let’s just say that -
I’m getting bored with red/brown -
And I’m going to dig out my Christmas stuff -
Mostly because Linda (here) pretty much dared me to - ;))
I thought you might like to know that I've made a decision. ALL the Christmas fabric is being pulled out today!! It just seems like the proper thing to do. ;o)
Race you!!
After some emails back and forth -
Life gets in the way sometimes -
We decided to start on Wednesday -
We still have over a week left in the month -
So we won’t feel like we wasted the ENTIRE month of September -
And that gives us a couple of days to tidy up -
So first I need to make room - ;))
Then I can schedule the posts -
To show you the detail shots -
Of the last nine LHQSQ blocks -
While I PLAY - ;))
‘Cuz on Wednesday -
For Linda and for me -
It’s “Ladies - Start your engines!” -
And the Race is ON!!

Took a look at the hearts -
That I have made so far -
For my Memory Quilt -
All bagged up -
Don’t remember why -
I need a plan for the ones that I have made already -
But I also need to allow for the ones -
Like the 5 Black/White/Red ones -
And Jelly Beans -
That are “in progress” - ;))
And the JRRQ ones that I haven’t made yet -
And - I want to keep them in order -
But - I’m not sure what that will look like -
Color-wise - ;))
So far -
I have 57 - including Wolf Song -
And - they ARE in order -
Don’t remember doing that -
Seems like I thought about this before, huh? ;))
And it seems that if I want to keep adding to it -
That the colors are just going to have to fall where they may -
I can’t wait until I have ALL of the hearts made before I start -
“Cuz that just ain’t gonna happen - ;))
Hopefully I will be adding hearts to this quilt -
For a very loooooooooooong time -
So -
I think that I'll just start in the center -
And work my way out to the edges -
But -
Should I go in rows -
And make a square -
Or go in a circle -
Or go in a spiral -
Or what?
Maybe a “quilt-as-you-go” kind of thing -
But for sure -
I think that this needs to marinate in my brain -
Just a little bit more -
So - if you guys have any suggestions -
I’m listening - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
EDIT UPDATE -
I thought of one more last night -
Start in the top left corner -
And add them like a Quarter Log Cabin block -
That would work!! ;))

And the JRRQ ones that I haven’t made yet -
And - I want to keep them in order -
But - I’m not sure what that will look like -
Color-wise - ;))
So far -
I have 57 - including Wolf Song -
And - they ARE in order -
Don’t remember doing that -
Seems like I thought about this before, huh? ;))
And it seems that if I want to keep adding to it -
That the colors are just going to have to fall where they may -
I can’t wait until I have ALL of the hearts made before I start -
“Cuz that just ain’t gonna happen - ;))
Hopefully I will be adding hearts to this quilt -
For a very loooooooooooong time -
So -
I think that I'll just start in the center -
And work my way out to the edges -
But -
Should I go in rows -
And make a square -
Or go in a circle -
Or go in a spiral -
Or what?
Maybe a “quilt-as-you-go” kind of thing -
But for sure -
I think that this needs to marinate in my brain -
Just a little bit more -
So - if you guys have any suggestions -
I’m listening - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
EDIT UPDATE -
I thought of one more last night -
Start in the top left corner -
And add them like a Quarter Log Cabin block -
That would work!! ;))

Design Wall Monday - 7/2/12
DESIGN WALL MONDAY - More Squirrels!
Check out all of us who link up with Judy L. at Patchwork Times on Mondays.
We have some awesome stuff on our walls!
Well, THEY do - ME - not so much sometimes - ;))
===
I get distracted quite easily -
And am always seeing "Squirrels" -
And I like shiny objects - ;))
So - just because I'm only showing LHQSQ blocks -
That doesn't mean that I don't have other stuff going on - ;))
Floral Applique is on the hallway design wall -
JRRQ#3 is off to the quilter -
Jelly Beans is in a box waiting its turn to go to the quilter -
Wolf Song is back and in its new home -
JRRQ#1 and #2 are waiting for #3 to come back -
So they can all be mailed to my nephew -
And I made some more hearts -
So I managed to get a BUNCH of posts transferred from my WORD doc drafts -
to Blogger - AND get photos edited and added - and all set up to go "live" -
Some of the photos are scans of my older quilts -
So I have some new Quilt Journal entries ready to go -
AND another batch of blocks are worked up - so they are ready, too -
YAY for Blogger "DRAFT" mode - ;))
And if you’re wondering what all of the white pages -
On my design are -
They are tracings of some of my stencils - ;))
This is How I Do It -
I take one of my stencils -
Trace it on notebook paper -
And pin it to the wall -
To see which one I like the best -
I like this border -
And the corner -
But I think the scale is too large -
I think that it would overpower -
The smaller scale leaves and flowers -
In the body of the quilt -
So I look at the stencil tracings -
Every time I go down the hall -
And one of these days -
I’ll turn those stencil tracings -
Into the border for this quilt - ;))
Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -
