It doesn't matter

It doesn't matter

Recently I received my November 2011 issue of American Quilter in the mail.

On the cover is a photo of a beautiful quilt called
“Winter Wonderland” by Judy D’Iapico.

On page 47 – it was shown as one of eight quilts that had won
2nd Place, Ultimate Guild Challenge in Knoxville – 2011.

It is a beautiful quilt.

Done in raw-edge appliqué.

I look at all of the years I have invested in getting my Floral Appliqué edges

Needle-turned under –

All nice and neat –

By hand -

And wonder why I even bothered.

It doesn’t matter.

But –

Then I realize that -

It DOES matter –

TO ME!!

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

Raw Edge applique - now there's a topic to open some discussion! I think it's kinda cute on a kids quilt, where it gives some texture to the applique edge. But overall, I think it simply looks sloppy. Any applique I do is done on the machine (I rarely do applique) but nothing beats the beauty of hand applique - just my opinion.

If it matters to you, then it DOES matter - you're right. And I think there are quite a few quilters out there that would agree. Though there's a time and place for raw edge applique and sometimes it can be beautiful, I'm a purist and feel that those edges should be turned under if you're serious about applique.

I agree with Katie M. I think a show quilt should have perfectly turned under edges.

I never cared much for the raw edge applique - that's just me. I think people should do what THEY like. I have some projects waiting to be finished because they have applique. I have a hard time finding the time to finish them the way I want to finish them - neatly turned under. :)

I blanket stitch, I needle turn, I machine quilt, I raw edge.....I make my quilts for me....It is a personal thing. If everyone was the same, it would be extremely boring.....and who am I to say what someone else quilts is crap? Whose version of "right" would it be if there was only one way of doing it? Mine? Yours? Martha Stewart's? Quiltzilla's?
