Potholder #2 - HST - Continued -

Just for fun -

Here's how to use the LEFT-EZE Rule™

To cut HST - Half-Square Triangles -

RIGHT-HANDED* -

Take 2 scrap strips 2" wide by at least 2-1/2" long -

Layer them on top of each other - right sides together -

Using the LEFT-EZE Rule™

Line up your strip on your cutting mat -

And - starting at the LEFT end of the strip -

Turn the ruler on its side -

And trim the end to make it straight -

Then - starting at the LEFT end of the strip -

Line up the LEFT edge of the ruler with the LEFT cut edge -

With the BLACK triangle at the TOP of the strip -

You can now do what LEFTIES have done f.o.r.e.v.e.r. -

You can IGNORE the NUMBERS and focus on the LINES -

The bottom of the strip will line up with the marking -

That corresponds to the WIDTH of the strip -

And THAT number will be BACKWARDS - LOL -

Cut UP the RIGHT side of the ruler -

To cut a second one -

Rotate the ruler -

To put the BLACK triangle at the BOTTOM of the strip -

The bottom of the strip will line up with the marking -

That corresponds to the WIDTH of the strip -

And THIS time THAT number will be UPSIDE-DOWN - LOL -

Cut UP the RIGHT side of the ruler -

There are NO BACK-HANDED CUTS!! -

BOTH cuts are from BOTTOM to TOP -

Along the RIGHT-SIDE of the ruler -

I have a tendency to OVER-compensate -

When I make the SECOND/VERTICAL/STRAIGHT cut -

And usually cut them a smidge too big -

So I turn the SECOND/VERTICAL/STRAIGHT cut ones around -

And measure them again with the ruler -

Surprisingly enough -

My second cut is more accurate if I cut it RIGHT-HANDED - LOL -

Take them both to the sewing machine -

And sew them from the FLAT end -

Like I showed you yesterday -

But this time the YELLOW will be on top -

Take them to the ironing board -

Press them open to the DARK side -

Measure them -

And they both should measure 2" square -

Which is the same size as the strip we started with -

Then clip ONE DOG-EAR -

The SECOND DOG-EAR has already been cut off -

It would have been the tiny piece UNDER the BLACK triangle - LOL -

These two units will match the 2" HST and 2" squares already cut -

And play nicely with anything else we want to cut from a 2" strip -

One interesting thing that I noticed -

Is that the dashes in the PINK triangles cut LEFT-HANDED (on the LEFT) -

Go in a different direction -

Than the ones in the PINK triangles cut RIGHT-HANDED (on the RIGHT) -

After I played with the demo strips -

I cut some HST for my potholders -

But only got 6 from this set of strips -

I'll have to cut some more tomorrow -

And/or some squares -

Don't know yet -

But I DO know -

That I need 16 "somethings" -

For a 16-patch -

And those "somethings" -

Will "match" size-wise -

If they are also cut from 2" strips - LOL - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

*NOTE -
A longer version of the RIGHT-HANDED tutorial can be found - HERE -
And I even have a "RIGHT-HANDED Conversion Kit" if you want one - LOL - ;))
