Here’s to those bloggers who do NOT moderate their comments -
May they reconsider the option - ;))
===
It seems to me that the Spammers are getting more creative -
And they seem to like leaving weird comments on older posts -
With links to who knows where - ;))
I think that Spammers are counting on -
Bloggers not checking their older posts and comments -
And are trying to sneak them in there when we're not looking - ;))
For some reason -
They seem to like my little blog - ;))
I seriously doubt that I have THAT many fans -
In some of those countries listed in my “Audience” stats - ;))
But I/we do have options -
I limit my comments to “registered users” -
I “moderate” my comments -
And I have enabled “word verification” - ;))
I discussed “registered users” before -
And talked about the difference between -
A Google Account Profile -
And a Blogger Profile - HERE - ;))
I started to "moderate" my comments -
When I first started my blog -
Simply because I didn't get many comments -
And I didn't want to MISS one - ;))
Now it turns out that it's not such a bad idea - ;))
It allows me to read ALL of the comments -
BEFORE they get published -
But even then sometimes I can't decide -
If a particular comment is Spam or not - ;))
And I have noticed that more and more blogs -
Have gone back to having "word verification" -
Even Bonnie Hunter has it now - ;))
I have always thought that it was there for a reason -
And that any "hassle" is minimal -
Compared to the Spam -
That gets through -
Despite Blogger's best efforts - ;))
And the next time you see the “word verification” box -
Click on the last icon -
The question mark -
It has some interesting information -
Especially that last part - ;))
Instructions
Please enter the words you see in the box, in order and separated by a space. Doing so helps prevent automated programs from abusing this service.
If you are not sure what the words are, either enter your best guess or click the reload button next to the distorted words.
Visually impaired users can click the audio button to hear a set of words that can be entered instead of the visual challenge.

Helping the World One Word at a Time
By entering the words in the box, you are also helping to digitize texts that were written before the computer age. The words that you see were taken directly from old texts that are being scanned and stored in digital format in order to preserve them and make them more accessible to the world. Since some of the words in these texts are difficult for computers to process, we are using the results of your efforts to help decipher them
Sure makes sense to me -
And I’m beginning to think - that it’s not just me - ;))

I don't know why, but I rarely get spam comments. I do have it set to registered user. And due to a recent comment on an OLD post, I have it set to moderate comments on posts older than 21 days. However, I don't use the word verification because honestly I have decided too many times to "not comment" because it made commenting a hassle. But that is just my take. I do read all my comments and reply or go and delete them if they are spam. I get much more spam from a comment form on a couple of websites I manage. I just click delete and laugh at their wasted effort.
As for the "helping to digitize old texts" well most of what I am getting as word verif..is numerical so I think that is just so much smoke.
The few times I've done one of those blog hop things, they requests word verification be turned off - I have - but then I turn it back on right after the 'hop'. I'm thinking those hops aren't worth having someone drop something I don't want....
That's interesting, Gene - you say that you read all of your comments (I assume daily) but only moderate comments on posts older than 21 days - how do you monitor for spam within the last three weeks? Do you go back and re-read all of those comments? Some of the comments I see posted on blogs look very strange and sometimes I don't think that the blogger even knows that they are there - ;))
And I know that word verification is a hassle - and I DO appreciate those of you who leave comments in spite of it. I have read that people are getting numerical verifications - but I personally don't see many. And you're probably right - the smoke may be their way of trying to justify it - but in the end - if it keeps the robots away from my blog - it's worth it to me - ;))
I agree - that's one reason that I don't do those "hops" - that and the fact that I don't DO deadlines anymore - haha - ;))
Are you freakin' kidding me after she made such a fuss about others having verification turned on? No, I will not go look for myself but you know why, LOL.
I do what Katie does re: blog hops but as soon as my day is over, or a day later, I'm back to moderating them.
Honest - she says - and I'm quoting here -
I know it's a hassle, but I've had to enable the word verification thing so that EVERYONE is eligible for blog giveaways. It's the only way to keep the spammers, scammers and other baddies at bay!

Hops - that's one of the reasons that I don't DO those hops - ;))
