Design Wall Monday - Orca Bay - 1/16/12

DESIGN WALL MONDAY - ORCA BAY - 1/16/12
Check out all of us who link up with Judy L. at Patchwork Times on Mondays.  -
We have some awesome stuff on our walls! Well, THEY do - ME - not so much sometimes - ;))
===

Here comes the fun part -

I laid out the patches for three white blocks -
And three black blocks -

I started with the first black block on the lower left -
And had trouble getting the block to come out to 6-1/2” -
Even after switching to the Lexus/Lily -

But I FINALLY got it the right size -
Or at least close enough for me - ;))

But because I was having trouble -
I decided to play/test my seam allowance AGAIN with some nine-patches -

So I cut some 2” squares -
See - they ARE 2” square -

Then I sewed up a little nine-patch -
Pressed it all nice and neat -
It should measure 5” square when it gets sewn together -
Cute - huh?

Measured it up -

From side to side - 5" -
Right on -

From top to bottom - 4-7/8" -
It’s 1/8” SHORT -

It seems that my vertical seams -
Between the patches are right on -

But my horizontal seams -
Between the rows -
Are TOO WIDE?

How does that happen?

Have you ever had your computer do something really weird and you say to yourself -
I couldn't do that IF I WANTED TO!!

I'm saying that RIGHT NOW!!

How does one side come out shorter than the other??
I couldn't do that IF I WANTED TO!! ;))

It’s the same machine -

The same settings -

The ONLY difference is patch vs. row -

Guess it's back to the drawing testing board -

Some of you are probably thinking that I am being REALLY anal about this -

But -

I need to get that seam allowance NAILED before I try to get all of these
pieces/parts/blocks/geese/wings sewn together - and SOON!! ;))

What REALLY frustrates me -
Is that my “Standard/Usual scant 1/4” settings” WILL work SOMETIMES -
And then WON'T work at other times -
For NO APPARENT REASON!!

Is it the weather or what?? ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

P.S. Got an email yesterday - Jo-Ann is having a sale on the AccuQuilt ® Go! this week - $349.00 on sale for $199.99. If you have your heart set on getting one - now is the time!!

BOB and I are in the process of returning SEVEN dies - so we may not be the ones to ask about whether or not you should get one. We planned to tell you our little adventure next month - because first I have to get this top together in order to link up on February 6 - and as you can probably see - I don't really have the time right now to tell the tale. So just let me say this - Jo-Ann also has the June Tailor Slotted Rulers on sale this week - and for way less $$$. ;))

Is it maybe your cutting? I know the lines on my ruler aren't THAT thick, but maybe that's the trouble? Or maybe it IS the weather. I think that's a good thing to blame...we can't control it and it can't argue back!

Ok that is craziness!! Have you tested the center square to see if it is equally 1.5"? Then my next step would be to measure the back seam allowances to see if they are all the same. And then if everything measures right... Check that square ruler. Maybe it's wrong. And if all else fails.... ??? Let BOB sew your quilt together! ;)

I use my 1/4" foot when sewing blocks and it works all the time.

It's not you...It's the quilt fairy. She has been stomping around with her hob nailed boots on stretching the fabric.

That is craziness. Did it overlap slightly when ironing perhaps? That's the only thing I can think of.
