Testing - again -

Today I played with my TOWA Bobbin Tension Guide -

Again -

I made a practice sandwich especially for this test session -

I cut one yard of a WHITE solid for the top -

And one yard of a BLACK solid for the backing -

I changed the top thread to a PINK cone thread (50 wt) -

And set the top tension to "2" -

I used a RED bobbin (50 wt) for the first couple of settings -

Then when I ran out of RED bobbin thread -

I changed to a YELLOW (50 wt) bobbin -

And practiced some circles - loops - Vs - lines -

And the alphabet - just for fun -

I THOUGHT I found the "sweet spot" -

But now I'm not so sure -

The top shows BLACK "pokies" -

But  the bobbin thread in these is YELLOW -

The BLACK is the backing -

And when I re-checked the TOWA reading -

It was not consistent as I pulled the thread through the gauge -

The bobbin tension ranged from 130 to 150 -

So maybe the "sweet spot" is a range -

Not a "set" number -

I don't know -

I'll play some more tomorrow -

BOB says not to worry about it -

If I use the same color in the top and bobbin -

It will look just fine - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

That is odd that the backing fabric is pulling thru. I hope someone else can tell you how to fix that.
I do wonder if washing the quilt will sort it out

Make sure your bobbin winder tension is okay. I never thought of that as a thing but if your bobbin tension is varying, that could be a reason. You're so much more patient than I am with this. I'd have thrown matching top and bottom thread in and planned to wash it after and hoped for the best when I got close!

i know, i know, it can make you crazy. The yellow needs to be pulled up more into the fabric. Is your bobbin wound consistently? The pulls through the gauge should be not too slow, not too fast. I watch my bobbin wind and sometimes hold the thread a tad so it winds on the bobbin evenly. Sometimes, at the end of the bobbin, the tension changes, but the gauge should be an even number. I usually pull out the thread through the gauge about 12-18" smoothly at a time. Make sure there is no fuzz, lint in the case or the hook area. I use a very soft artist brush so the junk sticks to it. Never had good luck with canned air. No change in the eye yet.

Maybe you are using too large of a needle and those are holes showing the black backing. I don't use as large a needle as recommended most of the time.
