Watercolor Pencils -

Are FUN!! - ;))

First let me clarify -

I am NOT an artist -
But I DO appreciate what they can do -
And my friends, Gene and Barbara, are always painting something AWESOME -

But I hesitate to join them - because I can't draw -
And I don't look forward to the "clean-up" part - LOL -

So - anyway -

When Barbara mentioned Watercolor Pencils a while back - HERE -
I thought MAYBE that was something that I could try -

So I ordered some stuff from Joanns - HERE -

And today - I just played -

And had FUN!! - ;))

I haven't done watercolors since I was a little kid and had the "palette" with all the colors in their little "wells" and a paintbrush or two. I have bought some "art how-to" books in the past and never got very far with any of them -

But this "kit" is pretty good - the instruction booklet is VERY basic - and goes step-by-step. It's written by Kathi Hanson - and covers several different techniques -

It also includes some practice sheets that tie into some of the "lessons" - so I pulled off the top one - and just went for it. The second photo below shows the practice drawings better than this one - but there is a flower - a birdhouse - and a leaf to "paint". The instructions actually made sense to me - and it was FUN!! -

Here's a LEFT-Handed funny for you guys -
In this RIGHT-Handed world of ours -

I did the first step on the flower -
Then grabbed what I thought was the BROWN pencil for the birdhouse -

Went to check the color "name" -

And yeah - it's BROWN - upside down - LOL - ;))

So I finished up the flower -

And the birdhouse -

And the leaf -

The birdhouse "wood-graining effect" is sort of pathetic looking -

But the shading on the flower and leaf are not bad -

Considering that I don't have a clue -

But I CAN follow instructions -

And I CAN try to copy what I see - LOL - ;))

Tomorrow I'll play some more -

And since I have to wait for some of this stuff to DRY between steps -

Maybe I can also sew some sets of strata that are all ready to go -

Or do some of those "chores" -

That flat-out refuse to do themselves - LOL - ;))

Talk to you later - gotta go - gotta sew -

Excellent start! This sounds like a fabulous starter kit. I used to be able to draw, but my hands don’t do well with that anymore. So, for me just learning how to fill in the images with a proper watercolor look from the pencils would be good. Your three attempts at water-coloring those images are great! You seem to have a flair for darks and lights. “Contrast” in shading is the word I always try to remember, and you achieved that. I’ll be watching for more (especially since I can’t seem to achieve squat with watercolor anything! 🥴)

I think you did very well for a "beginner."

The truth is that you have learned a lot from quilting that translates to other forms of art. The use of color and value that you use in quilts - that knowledge also works for you in art.

Love the barn and how it is colored. I see a new addiction lol.

I used some watercolor pencils on a quilt a few years back (remember the microscope one? the fungi were drawn and then I added water...), but maybe I should get them back out? I follow a blog (new name inktorrents.com but formerly Whims and Fancies) and she does a lot of cool painting. Recently she talked about tracing designs to get started painting for those of us who can't draw as well as we would like and that seemed like a game-changer. I guess I always thought of that as cheating, but if someone who can paint and draw as well as this gal says it's okay, well I'm gonna take that and run and never look back!
